Buying a new PC

Postby IHxDave » Sun Dec 27, 2009 10:40 pm

I'm going to put it together myself--

Motherboard and CPU combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.309193

Memory:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211410

Graphics and PSU combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.310962

Hard Drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284

Case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146058

Operating System:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754

TOTAL: $1,020

Questions:

1) Will the PSU work? I'm going with this Thermaltake PSU only because it comes free with the video card; if there is any problem or conflict with this PSU, please let me know!

2) Should I add a liquid cooler?

I came up with this system by modifying the DIY PC in this article:

Don't bother with liquid cooling. Get a big heatsink and you're good to go. You can do a moderate overclock if you get a good heatsink and fan combo if you want to.

Overclocking CPU's aggressively puts a lot of wear and tear on it and decreases the longevity. Water cooling is a project and you have to test it for leaks and constantly keep an eye on it because a water balloon in your computer will send you over the deep end. hehe

Dave thats almost exactly the same system I built two weeks ago. Good call on the i5 Lynnfield; the i7 is a waste of cash for gaming. The only real difference is the case (i went full atx Coolermaster HAF932) and the video set up (your 5870 versus my two 5770s).

It really doesn't require OC'n or liquid cooling. I may still stack an aftermarket CPU cooler on it, but its doing alright out of the box. CCC monitor had the temperature at about 39 degrees while I was playing Crysis. Your set up should handle pretty much everything for another year or two at least.

No liquid cooling for me. I'm going to OC the CPU to about 3.2, OC the GPU a bit. After a couple years, I'll put the fastest i7 on the market into it and the absolute top-of-the-line GPU that it can handle, and squeeze another year or so of use out of it.

I just bought a RAZER ABYSSUS, too. fuck yeah

Oh and an Asus VH236H widescreen

Read up on OC'n the i5 series. If I recall correctly, it does a bit of it itself - up to 2.99 or 3.00.

Yeah it does. So I've got the system set up; I'm on it right now. I'm getting about 60-75 FPS in Crysis on high settings, 1920x1080.

Sounds about right. You could probably even push it a little higher if you wanted to.

Looks like I should be able to get a decent framerate when I replace my video card then. I was worried I'd taken a screen so big it's killed it for the forseeable future.

At least it's not 2560x1600.
